Reddit is considering Google-like search ads

Social news site Reddit is thinking about selling search ads, the company said on a recent call.

The big picture: Reddit has over 100,000 active “subreddits” (topic-specific forums) where tens of millions of U.S. visitors interact daily. 

• Reddit users, for example, will ask for recommended contractors in their cities’ subreddit, where they can see and reply to no-fluff comments in real time.

What’s happening: The company’s considering selling ad space on its search results pages to boost revenue. 

• The move would provide existing advertisers, which include local businesses, more targeting opportunities.

• “Over the long term, there’s significant advertising potential there,” said CEO Steve Huffman.

Why it matters: If Reddit moves forward, it would expand the digital real estate available for contractors to reach customers in their service area, complementing Google, Facebook, and other channels.

What to watch for: While the company signaled its intentions, it hasn’t yet disclosed details on timing, format, or pricing.
