U.S. wholesale prices of asphalt roofing materials in September remained flat for the third consecutive month, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data released Thursday.

What’s happening: A roofing-specific ‘producer price index’ (PPI), which measures the average change over time in the selling prices domestic manufacturers receive for their products, hasn’t budged since July.

  • Since PPI measures price changes at the wholesale level, it’s generally used to gauge inflation before it reaches consumers.

Zoom out: The overall, economy-wide PPI in September rose 1.3 percent month-over-month, the fastest rate in four years, drastically outpacing economists’ expectations. Inflated energy prices driven by the war in Iran contributed to the jump, per news reports.

State of play: Compared to September 2021, the roofing-specific PPI is up more than 28 percent, including a roughly 15 percent rise from April to July 2026 alone.
