U.S. heating demand in January rose 12 percent compared to 2024, according to the latest national weather data.
The big picture: Nationwide heating demand in January has remained relatively stable since 2020, except for 2023 when warmer temperatures caused a 19 percent drop from the previous year.
Details: The U.S. recorded 973 Heating Degree Days (HDDs) in January 2025, according to data from the National Weather Service.
- Catch up: HDDs measure heating demand by subtracting a day’s average temperature from 65 ℉.
- During the same month last year, the U.S. recorded 865 HDDs.
Zoom in: The ‘South Atlantic’ region, stretching from Delaware to Florida along the east coast, led the country with the biggest yearly increase, as heating demand jumped 27 percent compared to January 2024.
- All U.S. regions saw increased heating demand in January, indicating a colder month than last year, nationwide.
What’s next: February’s heating numbers will be available in early March.
