The latest on the Home Energy Rebates

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) turned two on Friday.

Why it matters: The IRA earmarked nearly $9 billion for two rebate programs — the Home Energy Rebates — meant to benefit both homeowners and contractors.

The latest: As of August 19, the rebate programs’ progress varies across states: 

• Launched: New York and Wisconsin. 

• Approved, not launched: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Washington.

• Applied, awaiting approval: Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Vermont.

• The remaining states are preparing applications.

What they’re saying: New York has seen a 30% uptick in rebate applications since the program’s June launch, and a Wisconsin spokesperson added that more than 120 customers have begun prequalifying for rebates since its launch early this month. 

Looking ahead: While things can change, policy expert Amanda Sachs said that 15 more states plan on launching at least one rebate program by the end of this year, and nine others aim to follow suit during the first half of next year.
