Despite being outsold by heat pumps since 2022, over 1.3 million gas furnaces have been shipped through May of this year — a nearly 19 percent increase from the same period last year, according to AHRI data released on July 11.
State of play: The figure marks an 11-month rebound in shipments after a steady decline from 2022 through 2024. Given the momentum, here’s a look at the five- and 10-year trends for U.S. gas furnace shipments.
5 years
Gas furnace shipments, 12-month moving average

As of May 2025, the latest available data, the 12-month moving average of gas furnace shipments sits four percent higher than in May 2020. But, since hitting a five-year low in June 2024, the figure has grown every month, increasing a total of 14 percent.
10 years
Total annual shipments of gas furnaces

Unlike central air conditioners and heat pumps, gas furnaces saw declines during the Covid years, with shipments contracting from 2019 to 2020, and again from 2021 to 2022.
Still, they grew seven out of the past 10 years, per AHRI. Total shipments over the decade rose 14 percent, from 2.7 to 3.1 million units.
