EPA proposes sell-through period for VRF systems

The EPA in late June proposed a rule to extend the deadline for installing new variable refrigerant flow systems using R-410A by one year.

Background: Under the AIM Act, the “Technology Transitions” rule, published in October 2023, initially banned the installation of VRF systems using R-410A on January 1, 2026.

• Soon after, industry groups wrote the EPA a letter, saying, “This is particularly problematic for residential new construction… where builders order heating and cooling equipment well in advance of knowing the exact date of install.”

Details: The proposed rule, in response to the industry, allows an additional year, until January 1, 2027, for residential and light commercial AC and heat pump systems using VRV or VRF technology to be installed.

• The rule applies to systems using “components that were manufactured in the U.S. or imported into the U.S. before January 1, 2026,” the EPA notes.

• “Specifically, this… would allow for pre-2026 condensing units, evaporators, and air handlers using R410A… to be assembled into new systems so long as those systems are assembled prior to January 1, 2027,” it adds.
