Google’s AI calls skip HVAC, plumbing — for now
While the company announced in July that it would begin calling local businesses on consumers' behalf, HVAC and plumbing don't yet apply

In July, Google began calling local businesses on consumers’ behalf to gather pricing and availability details. But there’s a catch.
What’s happening: While the news set off chatter across industries about its implications, a Google spokesperson last week confirmed to Homepros that the HVAC and plumbing verticals aren’t currently supported by the feature — and declined to comment on when they may be. (The initial announcement didn’t clarify industry specifics.)
- Why it matters: The industry doesn’t have to field new calls from Google’s AI — yet.
Catch up quick: As of last month, when customers make ‘near me’ searches, they may see an option to “have AI check pricing.”
- If they select the option and provide details about their request, Google will then make automated calls to a number of nearby businesses and present them with a range of options, including pricing.
The intrigue: While the feature may work well for fixed-price products and services, the nuanced nature of HVAC leaves open questions about how it would work in practice, if and when the industry is supported.
What they’re saying: “Do I get all the Google calls if I say we don’t charge a service or dispatch fee to come out?” mused industry advisor Tom Casey during a video call with Homepros.
- “You’ve got to actually pay attention to this whole mess, because, if [competitors are] putting their prices out there and you’re not, it excludes you from that competition,” adds Michael Venidis, president of client services at Ryno Strategic Solutions.
Yes, but: Despite the uncertainty surrounding the variables Google may use to select businesses, contractors maintain the option to opt out entirely should the company launch the feature in HVAC.
