A recent survey by software company Housecall Pro found that rising costs are affecting homeowners’ spending on repairs and upgrades.

What’s happening: The company surveyed over 1,100 U.S. homeowners and found that while most live in older homes and don’t plan to move this year, they’re “taking it slow and being selective” about home service spending, primarily due to budget pressures.

  • The resulting report, titled “The State of Home Service Spending” and published last week, found that “72 percent [of respondents] plan to stay in their current home for the foreseeable future, and 69 percent live in homes 20+ years old.”
  • While 96 percent do plan to spend on home projects this year — and 79 percent are planning at least one system repair or replacement — 77 percent of respondents are “delaying or reducing the scope” of such expenditures.

State of play: When asked which systems, specifically, they plan to repair or replace this year, 20 percent of homeowners said HVAC, while 28 percent said plumbing.

  • Meanwhile, repairs represented approximately 88 percent of HVAC jobs during the first quarter of this year, according to Housecall Pro’s platform data.
  • “Our data also shows a 10 percent increase in HVAC repair revenue share from 21.6 percent in Q4 2021 to 31.3 percent in Q4 2025,” the company wrote.

Yes, but: “Spending intent is holding up despite cost pressure,” the report noted. 59 percent of homeowners said they spent more than $3,000 on home projects in 2025, with 56 percent of respondents planning to spend that this year. 33 percent plan to spend over $7,500.
