U.S. shipments of both gas and electric residential storage water heaters from January to June fell compared to last year, AHRI data released Friday shows.
What’s happening: During the first half of this year, just over 2.15 million residential gas water heaters were shipped, down 3.6 percent year-over-year, marking the lowest cumulative total since 2016, when manufacturers shipped roughly 1,000 fewer units.
- Meanwhile, nearly 2.5 million electric water heaters were shipped during the period, down 5.4 percent year-over-year — and the lowest total since 2023.
- AHRI data doesn’t include tankless water heaters.

The big picture: The release marks a continued divergence among product types since 2021, as electric water heater shipments have consistently outpaced gas shipments in the January to June window.
- Of note: Full-year electric water heater shipments crossed five million units for the first time in 2024, and again in 2025 — a milestone gas has yet to reach.
Looking ahead: AHRI will release July’s shipment figures on the second Friday of September.
