The world’s tariff fluidity is set to continue this week, as a range of new tariff rates on countries across the globe take effect on Thursday, August 7.
To cut through the noise, here’s a look at where things stand with the U.S. HVAC industry’s top five exporters, which, according to HARDI data shared with Homepros, shipped to America nearly $22 billion worth of HVAC and water heating products in 2024:
- Mexico and Canada. While 25 and 35 percent tariff rates, respectively, exist on the two countries, the key exemption that has so far spared HVAC industry products remains in place, and there’s been no recent word on whether this will change.
- China. Many HVAC products from the country currently face a 55 percent effective tariff rate under a 90-day pause set to expire on August 12, with higher levels to follow if an agreement isn’t reached by then. There is a possibility, though, that the deadline will be extended.
- Thailand. The White House on July 31 reached a trade deal with the country, announcing that a 19 percent tariff — down from 36 percent proposed in April — will take effect Thursday.
- South Korea. Similarly, as part of a deal announced on July 30, imports from the country will face a 15 percent tariff beginning Thursday, down from April’s initial 25 percent.
Meanwhile, raw steel, aluminum, and copper imports from all countries face a 50 percent tariff, with the White House on July 30 expanding coverage to additional copper products, including pipes and electrical components, beginning Thursday.
