The newest hydration fix is coming to a rooftop near you: The blue-collar cocktail.
What’s happening: Bruce P, who goes by “@bybruce._” on social media, started posting about his signature rooftop drinks last year — and the spicy-sweet concoction is going viral.
- Roofers across the internet are making their own versions, often recording videos with Meta glasses to capture the full slurping sound effect.
State of play: His videos have captured millions of views, and copycats have sprung up all over the internet.
How it’s made: There are four key ingredients:
- A cup full of ice.
- A healthy coating of Tajín. (The spicy Mexican seasoning, with its 190mg of sodium, is a perfect substitute for electrolyte powder. Construction workers have been hydrating with it for years, but this drink brings it to another level.)
- The electrolytes, but pick your poison: Electrolit, Gatorade, or coconut water.
- And finally, some caffeine: Red Bull, Monster, or Alanis are the most popular choices.
Between the lines: Installers are often basking in direct sunlight for hours on end, so hydration is key. But scientifically, is the drink actually hydrating, or does it just provide enough buzz to get you through the morning?
- Tajín contains two key electrolyte ingredients: Sodium and potassium, which both work through the bloodstream to hydrate cells.
- Caffeine, though historically viewed as a diuretic, may not dehydrate habitual caffeine drinkers who drink under 300mg a day, according to scientific studies — so watch the energy drink you choose.
- Sugar is also a key hydration component, helping salts to move through the bloodstream.
Yes, but: Inflation is making the drink a luxury, and all of the ingredients could cost up to $9 for a single drink.
